Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and
Biotechnology of Animal Reproduction
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology was established at the Vitebsk Veterinary Institute in October 1927. Currently there are 12 lecturers (1 professor, Doctor of Veterinary Sciences; 7 – professors, PhD; 4 – assistant lecturers), 5 laboratory assistants and 2 veterinary intern-doctors on the staff of the Department. General guidance is carried out by the Head of the Department R.G. Kuzmich, professor, Doctor of Veterinary Sciences.
The major discipline at the Department is «Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Biotechnology of Animal Reproduction». The course of studies of the discipline lasts for one academic year, 262 hours in total, including 150 hours of laboratory and practical classes. Students’ training is of practical character, i.e. the theoretical material is viewed and discussed from the standpoint of the status quo and requirements of agricultural complex. Laboratory, practical and clinical classes are hold on the base of well-equipped laboratories, classrooms and clinics of the Department with in-patient treatment for large animals. MSc and PhD programmes students are trained at the Department.
There is a students’ research laboratory of biotechnology and pathology of animal reproduction on the base of the Department where undergraduates, graduate and post-graduate students work. Research is carried out in the following directions: the study of functions of animals endocrine system and their hormonal status; the study of endogenous intoxication in pregnant females.
The Department renders a wide-range practical assistance to the farms of the Republic in order to maintain good animal reproduction and welfare. The staff conducts the research on the theme: «The Development and Improvement of Medical and Preventive Methods of Obstetric Gynaecological Diseases and Biotechnological Methods of the Increase in Animal Fertility».
